Hike Mt. Woodson on Fry-Koegel Trail (Ramona side)

9:00 AM,  Saturday, June 29, 2024

Meet at GPS: 33.01116 , -116.95451

If you want to do a moderate to harder hike, this is it. Up Mnt. Woodson in Poway along the scenic Fry-Koegel trail. This nice but less used trail is easier than starting from Poway Lake and goes through Oak woods and high bush Oak Scrub along the north side of Woodson. Later it merges into the open main trail from Poway Lake going up and passing by Potato Chip rock onto the top, a 3.5 mile route.

For the way down, we will take the shorter, but steep, service road with stops for rock scrambles along the way, 2 miles.

Round trip is 5.5 miles with a 1200 ft change, time 3 hours. No Dogs on this hike. Sorry, there are no portapoties available.

What to bring: Wear suitable good hiking footwear -shoes are ok, appropriate hiking clothing for the weather, small snack, and 1-2 liters of water/drinks (3L if hot), sunscreen, hat, binoculars.

Meet: 9:00 AM.

Where: Park along Hwy 67 southbound (Woodson side) just after the long curved guard rail running along 67. It’s just south or beyond of the Archie Moore Rd. Trail access is there. You can do a (careful) U-turn at Archie Moore road to come back in south direction to park.

Directions (2 ways): 1) From Hwy 56 or south areas, get up to Hwy 67 as if going towards Ramona. When passing by the Woodson car parking area take a left on Archie Moore Rd (past Woodson hikers parking). U-turn and come back hwy 67 to park on shoulder after guard rail.

2) From Escondido going south I-15, exit West Bernardo Dr/Pomerado Rd. Go right, east, crossing the bridge of I-15 and then left onto Highland Valley Rd. Follow the curvy road 10 miles uphill until passing Mt Woodson Elementary School. Then a right turn onto Archie Moore Rd. and follow to Hwy 67. Right onto 67 to park on shoulder after guard rail.
