Hike Lake Calavera Trails and Volcano, Carlsbad

9:30 AM, Saturday, April 20, 2024

Parking along Tamarack Ave. near Strata Dr.

GPS coordinates: 33.17112, -117.28822

Meet at Trail Head along Tamarack Ave.

Join us for a hike around the Calavera Lake trails but first see the ground rock Labyrinth and then head up on top of the “old volcano” hill for a good view of the land. A short and/or longer hike.

The volcano hill hike is easy to moderate and length is under 2 miles round trip.

Others can continue with me to the outback water tower trails and return along Sage High School trail. A moderate hike up to 4-5 miles with some rocks on trails in sections.

Wear good shoes or boots, dress in layers for the days weather, and sun hat. You may want to bring along some water and a snack for the longer hike. Kid friendly and dogs on leash ok. 1 portopottie available at the trailhead.

Directions: The park trail entrance is along Tamarack Ave with parking on east side of street only and only where designated. Or park in the residential area along Strata Dr.

Tamarack Ave intersects College Blvd in two places, like a horseshoe.

From Hwy 78 take College Blvd south 3/4 mi to the first Tamarack Ave intersection, by Calavera schools, either turn left there, east, and follow down or continue on south 1/4 mi to next Tamarack Ave intersection. Go left, east, and follow Tamarack Ave until you see the cars and park entrance and park along street.
